Originally founded in 1923 as part of a move to differentiate itself from the city of Covina, the San Gabriel Valley’s West Covina was an agricultural and farming community that was lush with orange and walnut groves. World War II brought rapid expansion to West Covina; in 1930 the population was 769 residents; as of 2010, there were over 100,000 residents in the city. West Covina is an example of civic planning at its best; the city hall and police stations were erected in 1969 as an initiative to unify city government in Los Angeles County. The Civic Center Complex was built a few years later and includes the city offices, library and courthouse. The city is located just 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and is a popular place for commuters to make their home. Metrolink provides service to downtown Los Angeles from Covina via the San Bernardino Line. West Covina is serviced by the West Covina Unified School District; the district boasts two high schools, two middle schools and eight elementary schools. West Covina High School has a strong athletics program and an award-winning robotics team. South Hills High School, part of the Covina-Valley Unified School District, has a strong academic program which includes several AP courses including French and Computer Science. Students also have the option of applying to the tuition-free International Polytechnic High School; the high school is located on the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona campus. Many colleges are located in the West Covina area. ITT Technical Institute has a campus directly within West Covina, while Pasadena City College, Citrus College, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Whittier College and the University of the West are all located very close to the city’s limits.

West Covina is home to over 20 parks; in 2013, West Covina was nominated as a “Playful City” by the organization KaBoom!. The Galster Wilderness Park Nature Center features woodlands and trails for residents to enjoy. The preserve has several trails and is popular among hikers and scouts alike. The West Covina Public Equestrian Center is a peaceful place to spend the day; the center features arenas, well-shaded bleachers and an announcers booth; the center is framed by the backdrop of the magnificent San Gabriel Mountains. The Shadow Oak Park Community Center has great views, baseball fields, jogging paths and a playground. West Covina is a bicycle-friendly city and has a bike path that loops around the community.

Shoppers can’t get enough of the Westfield West Covina, a large mall that hosts a range of retailers such as Macy’s, The Disney Store and Crocs. The South Hills Country Club, described by members as being exceptionally friendly, 18 hole golf course with challenging holes. The Hurst Ranch is a family-friendly history museum dedicated to early ranching in the San Gabriel Valley; old tractors, antique cars and butter churns are all on exhibit here. For arts and entertainment, the nearby La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts features first-class productions and musicians. Every Saturday morning, the West Covina Farmers Market is the place to go for fresh produce, milk and cheeses. Located within an easy drive of Los Angeles, residents can easily enjoy all that the greater Los Angeles area has to offer for culture, athletic events and fine dining.

Several community events tie the residents of West Covina together. The annual Cherry Blossom Festival each spring is a celebration of Japanese-American culture, food, dance, and last but not least, cherry blossoms. The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire, each spring, takes place in nearby Irwindale and has renaissance-themed rides, food, games and artisans. In October, Galster Park hosts a Halloween celebration that includes pumpkin carving and costume contests for kids of all ages to enjoy.
