Seal Beach Homes for Sale

Named for the seals that once congregated in the water just offshore from this seaside community, Seal Beach is Orange County’s northernmost city. The city, which has a population of about 24,000, was incorporated in 1915. It is located across the border of Los Angeles County from Long Beach.

History

Known for a time as Anaheim Landing, and later Bay City, Seal Beach was a popular recreation destination in the 1920’s, owing to its beachfront amusement park. The city also featured a bathing pavilion with 1,000 dressing rooms, gaming rooms, and lights illuminating evening swimmers from the second-longest pier in California.

The federal government constructed the US Navy’s Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach during World War II in order to store ammunition for the Pacific Fleet. Once Northern California’s Concord Naval Weapons Station closed, it became the chief source of munitions for US Navy warships based in Long Beach and San Diego.

Economy

As with several of its neighboring communities, Seal Beach’s major employer is Boeing Company, which provides about 1,000 local jobs. The city also relies heavily on tourism, prompting the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce sponsoring a number of annual events including a Classic Car Show, Summer Concert Series, Christmas Parade, and Kite Festival.

Visitors flock to the Red Car Museum, which features a restored Pacific Electric Railway Red Car in honor of the former trolley line that once ran through Seal Beach on its way to Newport Beach. Others visit the Bay Theatre, a venue for independent film, or the second-largest pier (the longest is in Oceanside) in the state.

Surfers head to Seal Beach for its prime surfing locations, including the pier and Stingray Bay (a surfer nickname for the mouth of San Gabriel River), while boaters and yacht owners leaving Huntington Harbor find access to the ocean via Alamitos Bay.

Today, Seal Beach west of the Pacific Coast Highway continues to exude the atmosphere of Main Street America, circa the early 1900’s, while east of the highway are shopping, freeways, Boeing, and the Naval Weapons Station.

Real Estate

As of November 2012, the average sales price of a single-family home in Seal Beach was $625,733, roughly 4 percent higher than the Orange County average. Meanwhile, the average sales price per square foot for a Seal Beach home was about $322, or about 7.5 percent higher than the rest of the county.
