Aliso Viejo is bordered by Laguna Beach to the west and southwest, Laguna Hills to the east, Laguna Niguel to the southeast, and Laguna Woods to the north.

Beginning in the early 1800s, the area now known as Aliso Viejo was a working ranch granted by Mexico to Don Juan Avila. It remained a ranch, under different ownership, until it was purchased for development as a planned community in late 1970s. The first residences were sold in 1982.

An unincorporated community since 1990, Aliso Viejo saw a movement to incorporate in the late 1990s. In 2000, the Aliso Viejo Cityhood 2000 Committee introduced an initiative on the 2001 special election ballot asking voters whether they wanted to incorporate. Voters passed the initiative with more than 93 percent in favor of the move.
