Simultaneously one of California´s newest and oldest cities, Laguna Woods is a senior citizen´s mecca. More than 90 percent of the city´s four square miles is located within the over-55 gated community Laguna Woods Village (formerly Leisure World). Three other senior residential communities compose the rest of the city.

History
Development of Leisure World began in the 1960s on a 2,000-acre portion of what was previously known as Moulton Ranch. The community was intended to offer a haven for active senior citizens in a secure setting. In 1996 the community united against proposed development of a commercial airport along its border. A consultant urged the community to incorporate as a city. The City of Laguna Woods incorporated three years later.
Laguna Woods Today
Located in the Saddleback Valley of Orange County, Laguna Woods is only 10 minutes from Laguna Beach. Laguna Woods Village offers seven clubhouses, one with an 800-seat theater, swimming pools, lawn bowling greens, shuffleboard courts, fitness centers, an arts and crafts center with professional equipment, garden centers that provide individual plots, two professional golf courses, a tennis complex, and an equestrian center. The community offers condominiums, co-ops, and high-rise units for residents to purchase or lease. There are several shopping centers, retail stores, and specialty boutiques in the city, all within a short distance from residential areas.
