History

Laguna Niguel is named for the Spanish word for ¨lagoon,¨ and Nigueli, a Juaneno Indian village formerly located near Aliso Creek. The city is located on the former Rancho Niguel, which Juan Avila obtained as a Mexican land grant. Avila continued to own the land until 1865 when a drought killed off the majority of his cattle. In 1959, the Laguna Niguel Corporation, comprised of several Boston investors, made the land one of California´s first master planned communities. By 1969, 10 years after construction of the San Diego I-5 Freeway, the community was home to 6,500 residents. Laguna Niguel incorporated in 1989, becoming Orange County´s 29th city.

It contains millions of microfilm documents of land agreements between the US government and Indian tribes of the Southwest. It has appeared in several movies, including Outbreak, Death Race 2000, and Deal of the Century.
