The Los Angeles County community of Pasadena is a Southern California city that places a great emphasis upon cultural and scientific advancement: it is home to many important institutions. Just 10 miles to the north of downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena is a beautiful city in the San Gabriel Valley: in fact, the city once attracted scores of tourists from the east. Incorporated in 1886, Pasadena became known as a resort town and numerous grand-scale mountain hotels and the railroad brought wealthy tourists from the East who wanted to winter in the warm Pasadena winter. Architecture buffs consider Pasadena a significant place to admire the many examples of the Craftsman era of architecture as many prime examples of the iconic bungalow style can be seen within the city in the area known as “Bungalow Heaven”. Once the home of the original Busch Gardens (which closed in 1937), the famous Busch family once made their home here. The largest employers in Pasadena are, respectively, the NASA research center Jet Propulsion Laboratory (employing over 5,000 workers) and managed care consortium Kaiser Permanente, employing over 4,000. Educators have an abundance of opportunities in Pasadena with California Institute of Technology, Pasadena City College and the Art Center College of Design all located within the city’s limits. Huntington Hospital is another large employer with over 3,000 medical professionals on its payroll.

Pasadena High School is notable for its selection of unique enrichment programs for students to choose from with programs ranging from a visual arts collaborative linked with the Art Center College of Design and a graphics communications field of study connected to both Pasadena City College and Printing Industry of California. John Muir High School has had many famous alumni and is one of two high schools in the country to have had more than two unrelated Olympic Gold medalists. The Blair International Baccalaureate School is an innovative secondary school for grades 6-12: Blair offers the IB Diploma Programme, which provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education institutions. There is also a large selection of private and parochial schools for families to choose from. Several institutions of higher learning call Pasadena home: Pasadena City College, Pacific Oaks College and California Institute of Technology are some of the more well known institutions in the city.
Pasadena has no end of nature for locals who love to get some fresh air. The city is home to 27 beautiful parks, recreation centers and gardens. Wrigley Gardens are the beautifully manicured gardens that surround the Tournament of Roses building (the former Wrigley Estate mansion). With archery and a lighted casting pool on its grounds, Lower Arroyo Park has a unique blend of fun activities for residents to try. Brookside Park features lighted athletic fields, picnic areas, playgrounds and a library.
Pasadena has endless ways to pass the time for residents and visitors. Fans of the arts can easily catch one of several regularly occurring performances by the Pasadena Symphony or one of the many local theatre troupes. Visual art is highly valued in Pasadena and is on display in any one of the city’s fine museums. City art museums include the Norton Simon Museum, the Pacific Asia Museum, the Pasadena Museum of California Arts and the Art Center College of Design’s Williamson Gallery. Families love the Kidspace Children’s Museum, which features an education but fun collection of exhibits geared toward Pasadena’s smallest residents. Fans of beautiful homes and architecture must investigate Bungalow Heaven, a neighborhood full of beautiful Craftsman era homes as well as the mansions on Orange Grove Boulevard (known locally as Millionaire’s Row). For shopping and dining, Old Town Pasadena has it all. The commercial center boasts a well-curated mix of boutiques, eateries, pubs and comedy clubs. Sports fans will, of course, want to catch games at the Rose Bowl Stadium: having hosted five super bowls, the stadium is the home field for the UCLA Bruins football team.
Every new year, the city of Pasadena hosts one of the most important annual events in the country: the Tournament of Roses Parade : a festival celebrating Southern California’s beautiful roses and featuring flower-laden parade floats, horses and the annual New Year’s Rose Bowl football game. Other less famous, but fun events in Pasadena include the Rose Bowl Flea Market (held the second Sunday of every month) and the 4th Fest. The 4th Fest celebrates Independence Day in style with a kids zone, live music, barbecuing, antique cars and fireworks.
