Often thought of as being an independent city, Van Nuys is a neighborhood within the city of Los Angeles, California. This large and family-friendly neighborhood is home to over 100,000 residents who enjoy Van Nuys for its public parks, transportation accessibility, schools and sense of community. Named for the dutch farmer and banker Isaac Newton Van Nuys, the community began to be established upon the construction of the Van Nuys Hotel in 1911. The Robert Fulton College Preparatory School offers personalized learning against a rigorous curriculum for students in grades 6-12. Van Nuys has beautiful parks and recreation for its residents to enjoy. Balboa Park is a family-friendly recreation center set on the lovely Lake Balboa; the park offers running trails, walking paths and picnic areas. The Woodley Avenue Park is one of the valley’s best kept secrets; this park features a wildlife preserve, hiking trails, an archery range and a cricket field. The Van Nuys Recreation area has a large gym, auditorium, lighted baseball fields and basketball courts, tennis courts, and a large community room. The large Van Nuys Sherman Oaks park, in nearby Sherman Oaks, is home to the community’s Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Pool and the Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Tennis Facility. Delano Park, right in Van Nuys, also has lighted athletic fields and courts, a playground and lighted handball courts.
Van Nuys is home to many small stores, grocery markets and boutiques. Just minutes from Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks is holds the Sherman Oaks Galleria, the Westfield Fashion Square and the Sherman Oaks West Whole Foods. For fans of the performing arts, the Performing Arts Center offers ballet and dance lessons and performances for the community; movie buffs can grab a show at the Regency Theatres Cineplex Plant 16. Kids of all ages love the 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant, located in the heart of Van Nuys and adjacent to the busy airport. From this restaurant, diners can watch over 1,000 planes a day take off; visitors also enjoy the old airplane and decorations that adorn the facility. Residents who golf regularly visit the Van Nuys Golf Course; the course is an 18 hole, par 3 course and is fully lit at night.
Community events held throughout the year bring the Van Nuys community together. The vegan-themed WorldFest, held each year at Woodley Park, features vegan delicacies such as funnel cake, games, music, entertainment and wine. The annual Sizdeh Bedar Festival, a celebration of Persians, is held each year at Lake Balboa. The festival attracts visitors from throughout the country who come to celebrate Persian culture and cuisine. Beyond Van Nuys, festivals and events in Los Angeles abound; endless film, music and art festivals happen in the city each month.
