Though once a prime location for both farming and mining, the Riverside County city of Menifee was most recently developed as a luxurious retirement community in Southern California. Originally called Sun City after a similar development in Sun City, Arizona, today, Menifee is far more than a retirement community. The city occupies over 50 square miles and its booming population is expected to exceed 100,000 residents (of all ages) by the year 2030. It’s location (only an hour from Orange County and an hour and a half from Los Angeles) and charm make it a great choice for families who like prefer a laid back lifestyle with access to all that Los Angeles and Orange County have to offer.

Though some Menifee residents commute as far as an hour and a half to Los Angeles for work or an hour to San Diego, numerous employment opportunities exist right in the city. The Mt. San Jacinto Community college employs close to 500, while Valley Health System employs 300 workers. Bianchi International, a law enforcement uniform supplier, and South California Edison, each employ hundreds. San Bernardino and Riverside are within easy driving distance of Menifee and many city residents find work at one of the big employers in those cities.

Menifee’s youngest residents are served by three different school districts: the Menifee Union School District, Romoland School District and the Perris Union High School District. Menifee’s high school education is completely covered by the Perris Union district, which offers a variety of different schools, including the California Military Institute and the Choice2000 online high school. Four local private schools provide an alternative to Menifee’s public schools. The Mt. San Jacinto community college allows post-secondary learners to continue their education: students can earn two year degrees, become registered nurses or transfer into a four year institution down the road.

City residents can kick back at the Menifee Community Center, which offers residents lit baseball fields, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, manicured fitness trails and a basketball court. If you’d prefer to explore one of Menifee’s lakes, it’s easy to rent a boat from a variety of vendors dotted along the shores. Avid golfers may want to join the Menifee Lakes Country Club or book a tee time with their Menifee resident discount. Would-be actors and actresses can try their hand on the stage as the San Jacinto Community College theater department regularly invites the community to audition for one of their productions. The Sun City Library is an excellent resource for readers of all levels: the library regularly hosts everything from children’s programs to award winning authors. The Arts Council Menifee regularly brings musicians, exhibits and artists to the city and is always seeking new members to get involved.

Every year, the community gathers for the annual Menifee Half Marathon and 5K run in May. Each July, the Lake Menifee Women’s Club treats the city to an Independance Day celebration full of special entertainment, vendors, food, family games, and fireworks at dusk. Sentimentalists, retro and kitsch lovers alike look forward to the annual 50’s Flashback & Car Show held at the LifeCare Center. Festivities include raffles, costume contests, vintage sounds and a nostalgic car show.

With its proximity to major metropolitan centers like Los Angeles and San Diego, Menifee is an excellent family-oriented city where one can get away from it all without getting too far away. The strong community and educational opportunities encourages residents to both move and stay in this beautiful Southern California city.
